If your not careful you may be fooled by a online sale where real and fake items are mixed together. Online sales sites like ebay do pages that help buyers identify fake Pokemon toys, but in the end it's alway buyer beware.

If you see ebay auctions with a cheap price on a popular or rare Pokemon toy that is a red flag that something is wrong!
Beware of Hong Kong & China try to do north America only in ebay searches and that will eliminate many bootlegs from your search results (Japan is fine) BUT thats not always going to exclude the fake toy sellers. Ebay sadly harbours many dodgy sellers who make easy money from people who don't understand a real toy vs fake.

Many TOMY figures have a seam that runs along part of the body. When produced by TOMY (these figures are made in two separate pieces and glued together in production.) When a bootlegger casts his or her own mold from a legitimate figure, the seam will either be diminished, or disappear entirely. You can see an example on the photos attached on Nidoran (the left is a genuine TOMY figure, the one on the right is a bootleg.) Another indicator is the depth and sharpness of the TOMY logo. ("When a bootlegger makes their own mold from an existing figure, the sharper details will lose their edge and depth during the mold-making process. Here you can see the logo on a bootleg Pinsir figure. It is less deep and sharp than a genuine TOMY, especially around the last few letters on the right side.")

When looking at Pokemon Plush toys you really need to know what tags to look out for. But even TOMY toy company tags can be cloned. In the end look for good stitching, good design, shape and colour and if it's a cheap price be very aware. Many real Pokemon plush toys come in display boxes, knockoff plush seem to never have a display box.
