This portion focuses on Ya’aqov, his wives and his children. It begins with Ya’aqov’s flight from his family and a dream of a ladder between heaven and earth. It tells of his years of service to Lavan to marry his wives, Leah and Raquel, the birth of 11 of his 12 sons (some by Leah and Raquel's handmaidens) and Ya’aqov’s daughter Dinah. Ya’aqov’s conflict with father-in-law Laban.
The haftarah speaks of Ya’aqov journey and his service to earn a wife, which refers to the Torah portion that tells this story.
