Artist Soyun Park explores what happens between control and collapse through a custom gesture-recognition experiment based on the project “Autonomy of a Fall.” Using an open-source YOLO-based Human Fall Detection model, she retrains the system to recognize the in-between moments of a fall—not as failure, but as dance.
Working with volunteers, Soyun captured 150 still frames of these transitional movements and balanced them with an existing fall-detection dataset. The model now identifies the spectrum between standing and falling as “dancing,” highlighting how binary machine-learning labels often erase human nuance.
Shot in Den Haag, this project reveals the beauty and subjectivity in the moment where surrender meets control.
