Northeast Monsoon Dynamics

Описание: In this video, I talk about NEM dynamics (in my own words based on my analysis and understanding).

Major NEM features:

1. Depends mostly on presence of tropical easterly waves, which are very erratic features (not like a jet or any other wave such as Rossby or Kelvin).

2. Depends also on Upper Air Circulation development, which is fully tied to presence of warm pools that drive convection.

3. Due to the degeneration of EICC (in its reversal phase), no clear footprint of warm pool exists. Highly local and also has footprints of SWM seasonal behavior (good SWM generally doesn’t bore well for NEM).

4. No MISO, hence active & break phases don’t have a ~ 2 week time-scale, making things difficult for NEM (in comparison to SWM, which is governed by MISO).

5. NEM fully depends on MJO activity for convection. MJO being global than MISO, periodic occurrence of convective periods may happen even after 1 month.

6. Cyclones make things difficult, as they take away lot of energy from the ocean leading to prolonged break phases.
