On February 22, 2020, 42-year-old David Ayres got the phone call of his life. It was Hockey Night in Canada in Toronto with the Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs in the midst of a tight playoff race. Both Hurricanes goalies suffered injuries by the second period and they needed to bring in an emergency backup goalie. Ayers was their man. The magical performance by Ayers in Toronto ended up being voted by NHL fans the Best Feel-Good Moment in 2020.
