Play with Me

Описание: Lately when I come to the studio to work, I have been starting my day with an improvisation. It’s my way of trying to open the space of creativity and also get in the habit of making music spontaneously with multiple instruments and recording it.

I really want to start playing live again this year and one thing that is really important to me is trying to maintain the spontaneity of my creative process. It’s so easier to create something that feels spontaneous than to remain open (especially in front of others) to what actually is arising in the moment.

So these morning sets I just plug everything in and start playing. It’s also helping me to tweak little things with the workflow of recording and performing multiple instruments at once.

As for this painting, this is a series I’m working on. The image came to me one day while I was working on something else. I stopped everything and started making these. I really enjoy the juxtaposition between the somewhat chaotic background and the precise shapes in the foreground. This piece I am exploring other possibilities with this style of painting. It’s why it’s on paper.

My process often involves starting in a sketch pad, then taking that to paper, then to canvas. It’s been a fruitful way to explore and be open to accidents and naturally arising shifts in the way the work arises.

This video is an attempt to share a moment in the workshop. Today I made this music, then listened back to it while I painted and recorded the painting process. Then I stopped, wrote this and made the video and posted it.

I am VERY lazy when it comes to fine tuning, but I also love things when they’re a little rough and there’s little moments of imperfections. It’s kind of like my paintings, there is precision but also chaos and spaciousness.
