• Twelve-year-old mercedez layne died from blunt force injuries about her body, according to an autopsy conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Somu Gajula on Monday, June 8th, 2026.
• The findings have intensified the investigation into the murder of the Erin schoolgirl, whose body was discovered on Sunday morning near an oil well off Carapal Road, less than a day after she was reported missing.
• According to a police report, the grim discovery was made around 6:43 a.m. On June 7, when a worker employed with Trinity Exploration and Production Services arrived at well ER-46 to carry out maintenance work.
• The worker observed the motionless body of a young girl lying near the well site and immediately left the area to make a report at the erin police station.
• Police officers assigned to the south western division high performance patrol and response team were subsequently dispatched to the location.
• Upon arriving at the scene, officers were directed along a dirt roadway approximately 500 feet east of Carapal Road to the well site, where they found the body of the child lying face down on the ground.
• The police report stated that the deceased was found clad only in a green T-shirt and was nude from the waist down. Investigators also observed visible injuries to her forehead.
• The area was immediately secured, and senior officers, homicide investigators, crime scene personnel and the district medical officer were contacted.
• After examining the body, the district medical officer pronounced Layne dead and ordered that the body be removed pending a post-mortem examination.
• Crime scene investigators processed the location and recovered several items of evidential value, including a right-foot slipper, a pair of blue denim shorts, green and pink underwear, a cream-coloured cloth, a black plastic bag containing four packs of ramen noodles, a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes, a broken Stag beer bottle and a circular piece of wood.
• Investigators also bagged both hands of the deceased as part of the forensic examination.
• According to police enquiries, Layne, a pupil of Erin R.C. School, was last seen alive around 11:30 a.m. On Saturday, June 6.
• The report stated that her grandfather, Morrison Gastoigne, told investigators that he placed the child into a blue-coloured station wagon driven by an unknown man. The driver was described as being of mixed descent, brown in complexion, slimly built and wearing rastafarian-style hair.
• She was the only passenger in the vehicle.
• The man had reportedly agreed to take the child to her home at Los Iros Beach Road, Erin.
• However, Layne never arrived at her destination.
• Concerned relatives launched efforts to locate the child, and a missing persons report was subsequently filed with police around 4 p.m. On Saturday.
• The search ended in tragedy less than 24 hours later when the schoolgirl's body was discovered at the remote location off Carapal Road.
• Homicide investigators continue to pursue several lines of enquiry as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding Layne's death and identify those responsible.
• On Sunday, police arrested the suspect who drove the car, which they found at a location on Palo Seco Beach Road.
• He remains in custody as police continue investigations into the incident. Woman Cpl Dyer-Baptiste of the Region 2 homicide bureau of investigations is leading the probe.
