1) The story of Judah’s sons.
Genesis 38:1 – Adullam, Canaanite region 25 miles from Hebron that Judah would inherit (Josh. 15:35)
Hirah (noble family) was Judah's worldly friend who was outside the covenant family.
Verses 2-5 – Judah has three sons and settles in the low hills of Chezib of falsehood.
Verse 6 – Tamar (Palm tree) would become the line of Christ (Matthew 1:3)
Verse 7 – Er’s wicked act was rebellious going against God’s plan.
God will bring upon them their own iniquity, and He will cut them off in their evil. (Psalm 94:23)
Verses 8-10 – God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap. (Galatians 6:7)
Deuteronomy 25:5-6 – Proof Er and Onan shared an estate and Onan rebelled against God’s command.
2) The story of Aaron’s sons.
The High Priest Aaron (83 years old) had two sons who served under him, named Nadab (willing) and Abihu (my father is God). They had to be at least 30 (Numbers 4:3) to serve as priests.
Leviticus 10:1 – They brought their own spirit of fire to light the altar incense!
The five foolish virgins lacked the true fire of God’s Spirit and brought their own (Matthew 25:8)
Verses 2-3 – Strange fire (own glory) They loved the glory of men more than the glory of God. (John 12:43)
Aaron’s sons were the first two priests to serve under him. It was the first day of priestly service after the consecration, making their sin the first act of rebellion in priestly worship.
This event foreshadows the final rebellion of Gog and Magog, when they surround the holy city and God sends fire from heaven to consume them. It is the same judgment—rebellion meets divine fire.
3) The story of Korah’s Rebellion
Just months after the Twelve Spy report, Israel fought a forbidden war and was defeated, and God gave the tassel law. A physical reminder for a physical people to obey Him.
Numbers 16:1-11 – Korah and 250 leaders opposed God’s authority and were challenged by Moses.
The priests (Aaron and his sons) could touch and handle the holy things directly, because they were consecrated for that. (Numbers 4:15)
The Kohathites (servants of the Priest) were assigned to carry those same holy things—but after the priests had covered them with special cloths and skins (Numbers 4:18-20).
Verses 28-33 – Every rebel and everything they loved in this world was swallowed up and destroyed.
You shall not follow a multitude to do evil. (Exodus 23:2)
Verses 41-50 – Rebellion spreads like a plague, but Jesus standing in God’s fire can stop death.
1,500 years later, Jude said, Woe to them! For they have perished in the rebellion of Korah. (Jude 11)
Hebrews 3:8-19 – A hardened heart of disbelief dies in the wilderness.
Revelation 21:8 – All these judgments were shadows, pointing to the final judgment when rebellion dies.
Out of these three stories, God’s sovereignty reigns supreme.
1. Judah’s sons: Out of sin and deception came the line of Christ through Tamar.
2. Aaron’s sons: Out of strange fire came the lesson that only God’s Spirit makes worship holy.
3. Korah’s sons: Out of rebellion came 11 Psalms of praise.
