Lukas Kennedy shows his superior skill as a sailplane pilot with an engine out situation in a Zenith CH 701. Sailplane pilots chuckle when power pilot have to land on a runway in a simulated engine out scenario. The power pilots get sweaty hands and don't know how to manage their energy to the place that they want and need to touch down at. A sailplane pilot does this on every landing and understands what it takes to get a plane to the ground with it's available glide ratio and potential energy. There is not go around second chance for us.
This video was not a real emergency engine out but we did turn off the motor from 5,000 AGL and glide all the way down. We both wanted to see how this plane glides and well.. uhmm... not well at all. About 6:1 glide ratio. Yikes!
We had lots of runway to work with and we knew that this simulated emergency would not turn into a real one. At Air sailing we always land in the dirt. The asphalt strip is only for the tow plane to take off on to avoid blowing dust all over the sailplane being towed.
Thanks for watching. I hope you learn that aircraft don't just fall out of the sky when the motor quits. We can glide down to the earth. Unlike when a hot air balloon motor dies, it usually does fall to the earth.
