Today Treasurer Jim Chalmers unveiled the first budget deficit since Labor came into office.
But the government was keen to stress that at just under $10 billion, the deficit was substantially lower than predicted going into the election when Treasury forecast it would be around $28 billion.
While the Liberal leadership under Sussan Ley has been under intense pressure, she and her deputy Ted O'Brien have begun to lay out an economic philosophy, based on restraining big government and cutting government debt.
