In this episode of Authors’ Alcove, Agnes Wolfe chats with fantasy author LC Conn about her dragon-filled novel Realm of Dragons: Fight for the Crown. They talk about what it’s like to build an original fantasy realm from the ground up, how character backstories can reshape a story as you write, and why Conn’s “villains” didn’t stay villains for long. They also dig into themes that show up throughout the book—truth, loyalty, justice, love, and the pull of belonging—along with Conn’s hope that readers walk away entertained and able to fully escape into a mythical world for a while. For more episode reflections and updates, you can also follow along on my Authors’ Alcove Substack.
The conversation also gets practical for writers. Conn shares her experience moving from self-publishing to working with an indie publisher, including what strong editorial support looked like for her books and how she handles marketing largely on her own. She also offers straightforward encouragement for newer writers: keep writing, expect your first draft to be messy, step away and return with fresh eyes, and read widely—even outside your genre—because it all feeds your craft.
About the author:
LC Conn is originally from New Zealand and moved to Australia in 2008. She’s been writing since she was eight years old, and after completing breast cancer treatment in 2015, she began writing full-time—leading to her One True Child series (seven books, plus a free novella). Conn is a dragon lover with a vivid imagination, and she balances writing with family life as a mother of two. Her stories often reflect how much she values family, loyalty, and supportive relationships.
About the book: Realm of Dragons:
Fight for the Crown is a fantasy adventure set in a dragon realm threatened by a neighboring country, with plots, conspiracies, and misdirection pushing the world toward collapse. The stakes are bigger than one kingdom—if the dragons fail, the dragon world itself could fall. Conn wrote this book as a true “pantser,” letting the story develop through drafts and character discoveries, while keeping descriptions lean enough to let readers build the world in their own minds. The novel is planned as a continuing story, with a sequel in progress set years after book one, and future books intended to follow the next generation.
