When is a small SUV not a small SUV? Well, if it's got a big boot, doesn't look much like an SUV and isn't actually all that small. If you'd like to meet the small SUV that isn't, you're in luck because I've got one here: The Nissan Qashqai.
The Qashqai is a funny name for a funny car – it really doesn't fit among the CX-3s and ASXs it battles with in the sales race.
It also costs more than those cars and yet Nissan sells a thousand of them every month in Australia, the same amount Honda sells of its HR-V.
Nissan is deadly serious, though. This particular Qashqai is the one most people buy, the petrol automatic Ti. It might cost a bit more than the others but it's absolutely loaded with stuff. You get these LED headlights, 19-inch alloys, sat-nav, decent-sized screen, leather or leather-like interior and a huge amount of safety gear.
It's a good interior, this one. Lots of space and in the Ti you get this gigantic sunroof that lets the light pour in. Just remember that you might cook the kids if you forget it's open.
One of the reasons they'll cook with that roof open is because there isn't a rear air-vent to blow cooled air on them.
Apart from that, there's good storage, the seats are comfy and you can fit plenty in the 430-litre boot and even hide valuables underneath the two piece floor.
The Qashqai isn't over-endowed with power, though. The 2.0-litre engine puts out 106kW and 200Nm of torque, which is lineball with just about every other car in the segment.
It's also got a dreaded CVT or continuously variable transmission. These things are hit and miss and, annoyingly, the Nissan's is more miss than hit.
It has that real rubber band feel and isn't as keen as, say, the Honda HR-V, to go and find the torque and get you moving. It makes the car feel loud and slow. This is the kind of engine with which a CVT should shine – as it does in the Honda – but it doesn't here.
Apart from the gearbox, it's pretty good to drive. Vision is excellent, there's heaps of safety cameras and sensors to plug the gaps and it doesn't mind corners.
The steering is good, too, and excellent body control keeps the kids from repainting the back seat while you're on a country road.
With those big 19s you'd be forgiven for expecting the ride to be a bit awful, but it's as good as any in the class and even as good as cars in the class above.
There's really only one other car in this class that can come close to matching the Qashqai for space and that's the HR-V. But the Nissan has a bucketload of stuff you can't get in that car, like auto-parking and around-view cameras and some of the safety gear.
It is missing autonomous emergency braking, though, and if you can't do a good job with the touchscreen, let Apple or Google do it for you.
In a way, if you buy the Qashqai, you're getting a good deal – it's bigger than its competition, has heaps of stuff and does what it's supposed to do without the added weight and complexity of all-wheel drive.
You can get the diesel if you need to carry or tow a lot of stuff but for most people, a fully-loaded small car with the interior space of a big one for less than forty grand is a good deal. I reckon it is too.
