Kay Kays of Sun City, Arizona is a true medical miracle. Between 1994 and 2008, she survived not one—but four separate diagnoses of pancreatic cancer, an extraordinary feat considering the aggressive nature of this disease. Her rare diagnosis: pancreatic cyst mucinous adenocarcinoma, placed her in an elite category of survivors. Today, she continues to live a full life, sharing her story to inspire and uplift others in the cancer community.
Kay’s Medical Journey Highlights:
1994 – First Diagnosis: After suddenly feeling extreme fatigue, Kay visited the ER and a mass was discovered on her pancreas. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and qualified for the Whipple procedure, a complex surgery that reconstructs parts of the digestive system. Recovery was grueling—she couldn’t keep food down and had to carry a dishpan for two weeks—but she gradually regained strength.
1999 – Second Diagnosis: A routine CT scan revealed a recurrence in the pancreas. Kay underwent a full pancreatectomy, removing both her pancreas and spleen, making her a brittle diabetic. Managing diabetes became part of her daily life, with insulin injections up to five times a day, major dietary changes, and reliance on digestive enzymes.
1999 (Three Months Later) – Third Diagnosis: Another CT scan revealed an affected lymph node. It took nearly a year before Kay could undergo surgery to remove it. In the meantime, she began chemotherapy—including Zofran for nausea and Gemcitabine for cancer. Side effects were harsh: hair loss and fatigue.
2008 – Fourth Diagnosis: Kay faced yet another blow when a suspicious spot was found on her lung. After fighting for a biopsy, results confirmed her worst fears: the cancer had returned. She bravely chose surgical removal of her right lung, a high-stakes decision that may have saved her life.
Today, Kay is Cancer-Free.
Since 2008, Kay has had no recurrence of pancreatic cancer. Despite her challenging medical history—including major surgeries and becoming a brittle diabetic—she continues to hike, fly at high altitudes, and support other patients facing similar diagnoses.
Kay’s story proves that survival is possible—even against daunting odds. Her message to others:
“Never give up hope.”
