In this interview from the American Experience archives, former First Lady Barbara Bush reflects on her life with George H. W. Bush, from their wartime courtship and early years in Texas to the presidency, the end of the Cold War, and the Gulf War. Speaking candidly about politics, family, and public life, Bush offers personal insights into her husband’s character, leadership style, and the defining moments of his career.

Bush spoke to American Experience filmmaker Austin Hoyt on September 28, 2007. This interview was conducted for our 2008 documentary George H.W.
