A FOX 9 report last May on fraud in the state's child care assistance program gained lawmakers attention, including calls for an independent fraud investigative agency. According to the Fox 9 report, money in suitcases was leaving MSP airport for the Middle East, and in 2017, the amount totaled about $100 million dollars. The report further cited Glen Kerns, who served on a FBI terrorism task force, contending that some of the money leaving the SeaTac airport was funneled to terrorist organizations, and the problem was occurring nationally. Kerns further said in the report that money was being generated through welfare fraud. "It's all about the day care," Kerns was featured telling Fox 9.
On Wednesday, September 26, the Human Services Reform Finance and Policy Committee heard an update on fraud investigations underway by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Office of Inspector General. The committee also heard from Anoka County officials on their success in handling fraud cases.
