Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Punjab to assess the devastation caused by severe floods, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, cloudbursts, and swollen rivers like the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. He announced a financial assistance package of Rs. 1,600 crore, in addition to the state’s existing Rs. 12,000 crore disaster management fund, to support relief and rehabilitation efforts. PM Modi emphasized a multi-dimensional recovery approach, including rebuilding homes under PM Awas Yojana, restoring highways, and supporting farmers through agricultural schemes. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been pivotal, evacuating over 23,000 people and providing critical relief. This crisis underscores the need for stronger flood management and infrastructure resilience in Punjab, a key agricultural hub, and raises questions about India’s disaster preparedness and inter-governmental coordination.
