సింహాచలం ఆలయ చరిత్ర | History of Simhachalam | Simhachalam Temple History in Telugu
Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, famously known as Simhachalam Temple, is a revered Hindu shrine located in the scenic Simhachalam Hill Range near Visakhapatnam, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The temple sits at an elevation of approximately 300 meters above sea level, offering a serene and spiritual atmosphere amidst lush greenery.
Dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the fierce man-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu, this temple holds a unique place among Vaishnavite pilgrimage sites. What makes Simhachalam especially sacred is that the deity here is worshipped in the form of Varaha Narasimha, a rare combination of two Vishnu avatars — Varaha (the boar) and Narasimha (the lion-man).
The name Simhachalam is derived from Sanskrit, where ‘Simha’ means lion and ‘Achala’ means hill — hence, "The Lion Hill."
The temple is renowned not only for its deep spiritual significance but also for its magnificent architecture, which is a splendid blend of Kalinga and Dravidian styles. Richly carved stone pillars, intricate sculptures, and detailed mandapas reflect the artistry of ancient temple builders.
Historically, the temple has been patronized by many dynasties, including the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, Cholas, and Vijayanagara Kings, with inscriptions dating back to as early as the 11th century AD. These inscriptions reveal the temple's rich legacy and its role as a spiritual hub over centuries.
An extraordinary feature of the temple is that the main idol remains covered with sandalwood paste throughout the year, giving it the appearance of a lingam. Only once a year, during the festival of Chandanotsavam, the sandalwood paste is removed, revealing the actual form of the deity — a grand event witnessed by thousands of devotees.
Simhachalam continues to be a symbol of devotion, heritage, and cultural pride, attracting pilgrims, tourists, and scholars from across the world.
