we have another fish kill across South Africa estuaries
lagoons are dying not from natural causes
but from pollution and pollution from sewage
so you've got two types of pollution
now we've talked about agricultural
industrial pollution which is like glyphosate
and whatever killed these fish here
on this particular fish kill at Mhlalali river
otherwise known as Tinley Manor river in the old days
this was not the second cause
this is eutrophication from pollution sewage
this first one here is definitely agricultural
industrial so
you can see around this area of this little
tiny river here that there's no real industrial
so you gotta really think hard as to where this
what happened here what killed those fish
alright then the second one is eutrophication
you know when you see that
phoosperence at night everyone goes ooh
it's so pretty in Cape Town
everyone gets their cameras out
and next thing it's not pretty
that is eutrophication that's caused um
a harmful algal bloom
and the fish die
so you know this is not only about the fish
it's about tourism and possibly even food security
and I don't know what the hell happened to those fish
Tinley Manor I don't know
they are busy checking out
the authorities have got the water
and they're testing it because someone did say
there was like a weird chemical smell
and look at the size of that river
it's not very big you gotta think that
not too many opportunities to poison that river
and well it got poisoned OK
now I'm gonna go over to the guys who reported this
very lekka thanks guys
excellent and this is gonna go on the sardine map
to be used as evidence in the future
or at least just a log
and the data that's on the sardine map can get used
for scientific purposes
or decision making in the future
because I'm logging everything there nowadays

as you can see we're in Tinley Manor on the river
there's just dead fish everywhere
fish are swimming
literally swimming out of the the river to die
it's just mullet it's a mixed bag mullet
there's perch there's soles
there's pick handles small kingies baby queenfish
the list goes on it's just crazy crazy
right as far as you can see
it's just dead fish this side of the river
and on the opposite side of the bank
there is just dead fish everywhere
even came across this what a size of a grunter
huge huge grunt
as you can see by my foot size
8 foot not even getting past the gill plate
sizer of sizer of fish
very sad to see very
very sad
but yeah
running right out fish are going all the way
right past the rocks towards the
towards the mouth area
but they're not swimming out of the mouth
they're coming out and dying in the water here
on the sand and dying in the pools what a sad sight

yeah something's happened here at the lagoon
all the mullets are washed up dead
and mostly across the other side
you can see them all washed up that side there
and the banks on the far side is just white
with fish all over there's tons there tons
see
somebody collecting the fish or something over there
but yeah
uh something's killed the fish in the lagoon
unfortunately it's very sad
very very sad
