After two full growing seasons in the ground, this little white oak that I started from a local ecotype acorn is only 13" tall! Planting an oak from an acorn does not provide the same instant gratification as buying one from a nursery, but it offers a unique look at the slow but important timeline that they follow.
In their few years, many oaks focus on root growth and establish a very strong foundation underground. Once established, growth in the following years can be rapid - usually up to 2-3’ a year. In addition to their unmatched wildlife value, oaks and their extensive root system are great at carbon sequestration, soil stabilization and water absorption.
