The Supreme Court has refused bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the Delhi riots “larger conspiracy” case, ruling that a prima facie case under the stringent UAPA is made out against them. The court, however, granted bail to Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohammad Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmad, noting that Khalid and Imam stand on a “qualitatively different footing” from the other accused.
The case relates to the February 2020 Delhi riots, which broke out amid protests against the then-proposed Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), leaving 53 people dead and hundreds injured. Delhi Police allege a planned conspiracy and booked the accused under multiple IPC sections and the UAPA. Many have remained behind bars since 2020, fighting bail across multiple FIRs.
Meanwhile, convicted rapist and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh—serving a 20-year sentence—has been granted yet another 40-day parole, his 15th release since 2017.
