People think moving is the hard part — visas, boxes, storage units. That’s the loud part.
The harder part is noticing when a place stops being somewhere you’re visiting and becomes the place your life is actually happening.
In this episode of Accidental Expat, I reflect on a lifetime of movement and the few places where I truly found community: music and bands, the military, and the Grateful Dead. From Dead parking lots to tape trading, from the Grand Forks flood relief project Wake of the Flood to living as an expat in Colombia, this is a story about recognition, belonging, and continuity.
I share the full National Public Radio interview from 1997 about Wake of the Flood, now preserved in the National Archives, and connect it to the present — rediscovering my own music archive from 2001–2002, releasing Must Be the Moon, navigating life after a liver transplant, and preparing to see Iron Maiden live in Bogotá with my wife for the first time.
This episode weaves together Grateful Dead culture, veteran identity, expat life, music as community, memory, and what it means to realize you’re still on tour — even when the cities change.
