Welcome to our Spotlight Sessions, a series dedicated to conversations with change-makers and people that have made an impact on the community of people with disabilities.
In this episode, we had the opportunity to speak with Kayla Lee, Director of the Adaptive Outdoor Education Center. Founders Bruce and Annemarie Albiston were catapulted into the world of disabilities in 2005 after Annemarie's father, Andre, had a stroke and acquired Aphasia, affecting his speech and language. From then on they Albiston's set out to make a difference in the lives of people with Aphasia. Having opened the doors of the Adaptive Outdoor Education Center in December 2015, their vision is now a reality. Their main mission is to enhance the quality of life for all people with disabilities through adaptive recreation and educational programs.
Kayla Lee shared her thoughts on the following topics:
1. How the AOEC developed from being an accessible hotel to creating their own recreation programs.
2. Why adaptive recreation and these educational programs are so important for people with disabilities.
3. How their programs encourage community building and create long last relationships.
4. The idea of looping in education to all their recreational activities.
5. Their work with “Brutally Beautiful” creating caregiver programs and retreats.
