Even though we are talking about the long-haired Chihuahua in this description, it's essential to point out that they are precisely the same in every respect to the short-coated Chihuahua, except for the length of their coat.
Chihuahuas are tiny dogs and will not weigh more than six pounds or grow taller than five to eight inches. They have a great lifespan, though, which can be, on average, up to sixteen years.
The AKC (American Kennel Club) ranks them as the thirty-third most popular dogs in America.
Long-Haired Vs. Short-Haired Chihuahuas
Size has nothing to do with popularity, not where the Chihuahua is concerned, he might be tiny, but boy is he mighty. We mentioned the coat is the only difference between the two Chihuahuas, so let's look at that first.
Long-haired Chihuahuas have longer, fuller coats, especially around the neck, legs, tails, and ears, and the hair is very soft, almost silky, and can be straight or wavy.
Because of the long hair, you're going to spend more time grooming your long-haired Chihuahua than a short-haired one.
Chihuahua Coat Colors
Chihuahuas come in a plethora of colors; in fact, the AKC recognizes thirty colors or color combinations and eleven markings. That’s a whole lot of coat colors for one breed.
It does seem to make the long-haired Chihuahua stand out a little more because having long hair does emphasize the colors more.
Long-Haired Chihuahua Temperament
Even if you've never owned a Chihuahua, everyone is aware of the Chihuahua's massive personality. What they lose in size, they make up with character.
They are pretty intelligent dogs and exceptionally loyal to their owners, but wow, they can be stubborn. If you want a well-mannered Chihuahua, you need a lot of patience and consistency when training. You cannot give them an inch because they'll take three.
Rumors about Chihuahuas being more aggressive than other dogs are just that rumors. They aren't more aggressive than your average dog. Maybe because they are so small, people, especially some owners, fail to see them as real dogs.
But that's precisely what they are and must be trained and socialized in exactly the same way as every other dog. But many owners see them as babies and pamper and pet them so much they forget the discipline.
Much of the perceived aggression stems from a lack of socialization.
If time is taken from a very young age to socialize a Chihuahua to help them become accustomed to new sights, sounds, animals, and strangers, they wouldn’t be so timid and shy; in many cases, that could be why they show some aggression.
You might have a small inferiority complex if everything around you was ten times bigger.
Long-haired Chihuahua Grooming
Chihuahuas are average shedders, but with them being so tiny, the hairs are probably not as apparent as a Frenchie’s, who is also an average shedder.
Long-haired Chihuahuas are going to need a good brushing a couple of times every week; to keep their coats free from any tangles, matting, or any debris they might have collected.
Teeth cleaning is essential for tiny dogs because of overcrowding. Even though they have little jaws, it seems they must have the same number of teeth as most bigger dogs.
Overcrowding or uneven over-lapping teeth mean it can be challenging to reach some of the teeth. If there's too much plaque build-up, it can lead to tooth decay or gum disease.
Both will impact the health of your Chihuahua; clean their teeth two to three times a week.
Long-Haired Chihuahua Puppy Prices
Prices of long-haired Chihuahua puppies vary from breeder to breeder. Prices can be anywhere between $500 to $1500. Remember to thoroughly research the breeders in your area before you buy a puppy.
Check out every breeder before you go for the one you like. Price is not always the determining factor. Even good breeders can offer lower prices, and it doesn't mean a breeder is professional or top-notch because they want a lot of money for a puppy.
Check them all out; you want to see health certificates for the parents and as much information as you can get on their genetic lines.
Where costs are involved, it’s not just the initial purchase price. You’ll end up paying considerably more for your dog over his lifetime than you paid to purchase him.
Costs are ongoing; food, vet bill, toys, etc., are just some of the costs. If you rush into buying a puppy and sadly buy one with hereditary health issues, your costs will skyrocket because of vet bills.
Is A Long-Haired Chihuahua A Good Choice
They are an excellent choice of dog for you and your family. As long as you remember, pick a good breeder, train and socialize your new long-haired Chihuahua, give him regular health checkups, feed a good quality diet, exercise correctly.
Most of all, provide masses of love.
