Esther Bigeou was born in New Orleans in 1893. Esther was a vaudeville and blues singer known as The Girl with the Million Dollar Smile. From October 1921 to December 1926, she recorded 22 sides for OKEH Records in New York. OKEH had a a collection of the best blues singers in America known as the OKEH Girls and these ladies recorded what were known at the time as "Race Records" sold mainly to black customers. Esther was the cousin of the famous jazz drummer Paul Barbarin, also of New Orleans. She is accompanied on this recording by Piron's New Orleans Orchestra led by Armand J Piron. The music was composed by Clarence and Spenser Williams and Edgar Dowell.
West Indies Blues was recorded in New York December 14, 1923 and released as OKEH label 8118A, Matrix S72175.
