High on a quiet hillside near the village of Eyam in the Peak District lies one of the most heartbreaking sites in English history: the Riley Graves.
During the 1665–1666 plague outbreak, the village of Eyam famously chose to quarantine itself to prevent the disease spreading across England. While this act of self-sacrifice saved countless lives beyond the village, it came at a devastating cost to the families who lived there.
At Riley Farm, far from the village itself, Elizabeth Hancock buried her husband and six of her children in just eight days. With no one to help her and the plague raging around her, she dragged the bodies to their graves alone.
This video tells the tragic story of the Riley family, their neighbours the Talbots, and the unimaginable courage shown during one of England’s darkest moments.
Today, the Riley Graves remain one of the smallest National Trust sites, quietly remembering a story of loss, resilience, and extraordinary human sacrifice.
