In this video, I demonstrate how to tie a knot in picture hanging wire.
From my own research and in asking a knot expert, I think that the improved clinch knot is the most secure knot for hanging artwork or framed photos.
It was the knot that I saw on the back of the wire package when I was first learning how to frame paintings many years ago.
In order to attach a wire to a picture frame you need some type of hardware. I discuss the difference between eye hooks and D-rings. D-rings are good for frames that are shallow or that have paper backing that prevent you from attaching an eye hook to the inside edge of the frame.
Picture hangers are another thing that you should use when hanging artwork on the wall. You don't want to use just a nail because it can slip or tilt downward. This could cause it to slip off of the hook and fall on the floor.
There are different sized picture hangers for artwork of various sizes and weights. I have hangers that are rated for 10, 20, 30 and 50 pounds. You can find some that will hold 100 pounds. The hanger prevents the wire from slipping off of the hook. And it drives the nail into the wall at the optimal angle.
As for small paintings, they don't weigh that much. The painting that I hang at the end of the video weighs about 13 ounces. That's not even a pound so any one the picture hangers in the video can handle it without a problem.
I include a few tips about how to hang the picture. I suggest marking where you want the top of the frame should be. Then you can measure the distance from the top of the frame to the top of the wire when you pull the wire tight.
In the video that distance is about 2 inches, so I make a second mark 2 inches below the first mark (where you want the top of the frame to be on the wall).
I position the hanger so the bottom of the hook is on that mark. If you were to position the hanger so that the nail is on that mark, the painting will end up hanging a little lower than what you want.
This effect is more pronounced with the larger hangers because the hooks on those are longer.
These are small details but these are the things you learn after you hang a few pictures.
I add rubber bumpers to the corners so that it creates a gap between the frame and the wall. This gap helps to improve the air flow behind the painting. The lack of air flow will encourage mold to grow on the back of the canvas or paper materials.
