Things to Do in Ganja
1.İmamzadeh Mausoleum
An amazing Shia Muslim architecture - highly recommended
To anybody who has even a slight interest in Islam and Islamic architecture, that is a great place to visit and should be No. 1 on your list of attractions in Genje. It is a huge complex that also houses the tomb if Ibrahim Ibn Muhammad Al Bakir - the son of the fifth Shia Imam and the younger brother of the sixth Shia Imam. Hence, its importance to Shia Muslims who frequent it. The colors, the architecture, the calligraphy all impress you immediately. Try to arrive in the afternoon on a clear day and you will immediately feel the holiness of the place. If you look carefully, you will notice the sun in a few places including at the entrance to the complex - it is a remnant from Zoroastrian times. They gladly receive visitors from overseas and are very proud to show them around. Have a look at the buildings and corridors which surround the main mosque - they are exquisite as well. It is also worth seeing the place lighted up at night.
2. Nizami Ganjavi Mausoleum
The Azeri Famous Poet
The most famous poet of Azerbaijan
On the entrance of the town A nice boulevard with monuments of his famous five bookMost of them Romans of kings and Armenian Princesses
Quite interesting
Kept clean and respectful
3. Khan Bagy Park
4. Lake Maralgol
We took a taxi from Ganga to the lakes Goygol and Maralgol. There is a small entrance fee at the entrance of the reserve, and after a short drive you first arrive at lake Goygol. From there you have to take a Mashrutka to go up to lake Maralgol and it is totally worth it. It takes about 10-15min from lake Goygol to reach Maralgol. From the drop off point you need to climb close to 300 stairs.Unlike lake Goygol, you can walk a fair bit around the lake, even dip your feet into the cool water. Great views over the high mountains behind. Totally recommend it, it was incredibly beautiful.
5. Ganja Heydar Aliyev Park
A large park with a relaxing atmosphere. There is a cycling track for enthusiasts. As well as a small lake. A amphitheater space. It can be seen in the photo. I was there in 2019
6. Shah Abbas Mosque
If you think that Shah Abbas Mosque looks quite small, you will be surprised how many men stream out of it after a Friday's prayers. I could watch that one evening. Of course it had not been possible for non-Muslims to enter the mosque while the believers were praying. Everybody had to wait outside so that I could have a closer look at everything.
7. Javad Khan Street
Walking street next to the mall
This is a walking street which starts from across the road from the Philharmonic building. There are mostly banks and pawn shops here at the start of the street with a few small time shops.I was surprised to not see more cafes here. There is a doner station here which is very good though.
8. Mausoleum of Javad Khan
Javad Khan was a fighter against Russian occupation in the 18th and 19th c. He sympathised with the Persians. He and his sons were beheaded in 1804. For the people of Ganja/Azerbaijan he is a national hero. Therefore his mausoleum is very important to them.
9. Ganja Mall
Strong aircon, easy parking outside of mall or paid inside,Good meals in Azerbaijan takeaways shop upstairs. The mall is never overcrowded.I found good choice of European food in Bravo grocery market, clean toilets.
10. German Lutheran Church
Helenendorf was founded on the site in 1819 by Germans from Württemberg, as ordered by Czar Alexander to help settle the region.
The History-Ethnography Museum of Goygol is located in the building of Lutheran church built in 1856 and operates as a museum since 1982.
11. Bottle House
12. Turkish Bath House Chokek
Chokak Turkish Bath was closed when I wanted to visit it. I read different versions of how it is used today: 1) an arts centre 2) a private bath of one of the Ganja hotels only Be it what it may, it was closed whenever I went there.
The bath is located in the neighbourhood of Shah Abbas Mosque, Ganja theatre and the city hall in the very heart of Ganja. A lot of people go for a walk in the square where it lies. The bath has got bigger and smaller domes. In that Square the history of Ganja from the 17th to the 20th c. can be explored, so one should not think lightly of its sights.
13. Lake Goygol
A deep blue mountain lake surrounded by dense forest can be reached in just over an hour from Ganja. Lake Goygol, often rated as Azerbaijan's most beautiful lake, sits 1,500 metres above sea level housing a wide variety of fish and wildlife. After recently opening to the public only a small section is accessible to tourists. Don't expect a day of hiking or exploring. But the drive through the mountains and passing traditional villages with a hint of German culture makes Lake Goygol a top attraction in Ganja.
