In the late 19th century, Grand Rapids, Michigan took advantage of the seemingly boundless supply of lumber in its lush, surrounding forests. Its economy boomed. The city became the furniture capital of the world, and its people thrived for decades.
Then the great depression struck. The city’s economy suffered. Its residents left in throngs. Where once there was an American city whose name was synonymous with economic boom, there was now bust.
This is the story of Grand Rapids through the better part of the 20th century, but it isn’t the story of Grand Rapids today. As its leaders brainstormed new ways to restore and surpass the city’s former glory, they came up with one idea: ArtPrize.
