A massive flash flood in Nepal's Rasuwa district has killed at least 95 people, with hundreds still missing — triggering a major rescue operation and high alert along the India-Nepal border.

At least 105 Indians are among 291 foreign nationals reported missing after a sudden surge of water entered the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibetan side.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah, expressing condolences and assuring all possible humanitarian and relief assistance.

But the big question is: What triggered such a devastating flood?

Several possibilities are being examined — from a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) and ice or snow avalanches to permafrost collapse, landslides and extreme rainfall over the Tibetan plateau.

The disaster also raises questions about China's infrastructure expansion in Tibet, including roads, bridges, tunnels and hydropower projects. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence that Chinese construction caused this particular flood.

The scale of destruction has been enormous. The flood wave is estimated to have reached 8–10 metres, washing away the Friendship Bridge connecting Nepal and China, damaging highways and inundating Timure market and customs infrastructure.

Several hydropower projects were also affected, including the 111-MW Rasuwagadhi project.

And with river levels potentially rising in the Koshi and Narayani basins, authorities are closely watching vulnerable areas in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand.

So, was this a natural disaster amplified by extreme weather — or could changes in the fragile Himalayan landscape have played a role?
