Shadi Abu Sido, a Palestinian photojournalist, broke down in tears as he embraced his wife and children—whom he had been told were dead—following his release from Israeli detention. His emotional reunion in Khan Younis was part of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire and hostage-prisoner exchange that ended two years of war between Israel and Hamas.
Detained since March 2024 during a raid at Gaza’s Shifa Hospital, Abu Sido was one of 1,700 Palestinians released in the deal, alongside 250 prisoners, in exchange for 20 Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
Abu Sido said he was falsely told in prison that his wife and two children had been killed. But upon returning home, his world shifted once more — his wife ran into his arms, his children clung to him, and he wept with joy, whispering “my love” over and over.
He also described abuse in detention — including beatings, shackling, and being blindfolded — claims Reuters could not independently verify. Israel's military did not respond to requests for comment.
This powerful moment captures both the human cost of war and the fragile hope that remains.
