A core capability for analysts in the Office of Finance is to access, cleanse and transform their financial data according to standardized reporting periods, like Year-to-Date or comparative reporting periods like year-on-year.

In this simple Alteryx workflow, we show how easy it is to acquire data from data sources like local files, spreadsheets as well as corporate databases and cloud-based applications using our single access point connector to reach all of these different places where your data might reside.

Once loaded, the workflow takes the data on a journey - often starting with steps to fill in any missing values, to convert dates and especially to standardize the data from all these sources into a common reporting format. We use data blending capabilities to bring these diverse sources together, using matching keys or identifiers to help in that process, and unlike spreadsheets, we make it easy to find any anomalies or exceptions in the data. Our reconciliation steps here show records that haven’t matched between our data sources - and can be highly valuable to identify records that might otherwise have just fallen out of the manual analysis.

The clean dataset can now be transformed, aggregated and further enriched - it’s incredibly easy to start with detailed transactional data and roll this up to show financial totals per month or another reporting period. By filtering the data using a wide range of date functions, we can quickly extract a roll-up of expenses for the year-to-date, as an example, or to pivot the data so that we have a column for each year’s expenses by Business Group and then calculate a year-on-year change.

A finance analyst might have previously handled these steps inside spreadsheets - with many manual processes, corrections, and exceptions needed to deliver the end result. Every time new data arrives, the spreadsheet would likely need to be rebuilt in order to handle changes in the data, but with Alteryx Designer - the modern Office of Finance analyst can run a visual, repeatable workflow that gracefully handles change and completes all the data analysis steps in a fraction of the time.
