On 20 January 2020, on the sidelines of the 24 Hours of Daytona, at a joint press conference between IMSA and the ACO, the Le Mans Daytona h category was presented. Following this, Jens Marquardt, Director of BMW Motorsport, congratulated the ACO and IMSA on reaching an agreement. BMW, which withdrew from the WEC in June 2019 following the Le Mans 24 Hours, had previously excluded itself from the LMH programme, citing the lack of a road racing equivalent around which it could have shaped a programme, but had been more supportive of a DPi-type discipline. Victor Leleu, Director of Motorsport BMW North America, also said that ‘it would be foolish to ignore the LMH and that in principle, the idea is a good one’. On 10 June 2021, Markus Flasch, Director of BMW M, announced on his Instagram account that BMW M would be returning for the 20234 Daytona 24 Hours. The following day, BMW M confirmed its return with two cars, initially in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship 2023. The decision to take part in the World Endurance Championship has not yet been taken and will be considered at a later date.
