In the 1300s, trade between Europe and Asia was booming. One of the most important cities was Caffa, a busy port on the Crimean Peninsula, controlled by Italian merchants from Genoa. It was full of people from all over the world. Years earlier, the Genoese had made a deal with the Mongols to use the city as a trading post. But by 1346, tensions had grown. The Mongols—now known as the Golden Horde—were unhappy with how powerful the Genoese had become. Their conflict turned violent, and the Mongol leader Jani Beg led an army to attack Caffa. But during the siege, the Mongols were struck by the Black Death, a deadly plague that was spreading across Asia. This event helped carry the disease into Europe—turning the siege into a turning point in history.
