Leader of the Congo River Alliance (AFC) Cornielle Nangaa has condemned what he described as 'ongoing offensives' by the Congolese army in North and South Kivu, accusing Kinshasa of violating the ceasefire signed less than a week ago in Doha under Qatari mediation.
"The Kinshasa regime has chosen war over peace. The Doha process exists, we are committed to it, and our delegation is participating in it. But it is now clear that all this is nothing more than window dressing to buy time," Nangaa told reporters.
Nangaa also stressed the group's continued commitment to dialogue while warning that repeated attacks could force it to reconsider its participation in the Doha talks.
"We are subjected to continuous and repeated bombings. We are continuing our commitment in Doha, but our good faith has limits. We will not allow criminals to continue killing our people," he said.
Local sources have reported increased clashes in several areas of North and South Kivu, including an attack on the Twangiza mining site. The casualties allegedly resulted from this incident. This renewed fighting threatens to derail the fragile peace process that was mediated by Qatar in an attempt to reduce hostilities and establish mechanisms for verification and dialogue.
So far, the Congolese government has not issued any official response to the AFC's claims, with both sides continuing to blame each other for breaking the truce.
