The Lantern Maker
In a quiet village tucked between two hills, there lived an old lantern maker named Eliam. His hands were worn, his beard silver, and his shop always smelled faintly of cedar and warm oil. People said he could coax light out of anything—glass, clay, even broken scraps others had thrown away.
But Eliam carried a quiet ache. For years he had heard the ancient promise: A Messiah will come. A Light for all people.
And every night, he would look at the sky and whisper, “When?”
One winter evening, as the wind pressed against the shutters, a young couple knocked on his door. The woman was heavy with child, her face pale from the cold. The man’s voice trembled as he asked, “Please… is there room?”
Eliam’s shop was small, cluttered with tools and half-finished lanterns. But he saw the desperation in their eyes and felt something stir inside him—something warm, like a spark.
“You may stay,” he said, guiding them to the back room.
Hours passed. The night deepened. And then, from behind the curtain, Eliam heard the cry of a newborn.
He froze.
A strange stillness filled the air, as if the whole world had paused to listen.
The young father stepped out, eyes shining. “A son,” he whispered. “His name is Jesus.”
Eliam felt his knees weaken. He didn’t know why—but he knew.
This child was different.
He hurried to his workbench, hands trembling, and reached for a small lantern he had crafted years ago but never sold. It was simple—clear glass, a wooden frame, and a wick that had never been lit.
He carried it to the mother, who cradled the infant in her arms. The baby’s eyes were closed, but His face glowed with a peace Eliam had never seen.
“For Him,” Eliam said softly. “A light for the Light.”
The mother smiled, and the father lit the lantern.
The flame flickered, then steadied—warm, golden, alive.
And in that moment, Eliam felt it:
The ache in his heart lifted.
The promise had arrived.
Not with trumpets or armies, but with a child wrapped in cloth, resting in the glow of a humble lantern.
Outside, the wind calmed.
The stars seemed to lean closer.
And the old lantern maker whispered, “At last.”
