Описание: Ok, folks, of course we tried to introduce surf rock music to mainland China! People seem to like it there! We didn't have much time to play many many songs like usual (like over 30 songs) so we arranged a surf rock medley as the opening song. But, this is not what we'd like to talk about here today. We wanted to share with you what it's like to gig live on stage.

To start with, although being invited as the show opening band and we are the only guest band from out of town, a lot of the songs had to be cut, because of time restrains. In fact, all songs we wanted to play had to go through the censorship bureau. Yes, sensitive lyrics will have to be taken care of. Normally, one can change a word or two to make the song not sensitive if there is a problem. The surf tunes we played didn't have any issue of course, as they were instrumental.

The sound check part in fact went quite well, and because some songs we had prepared were cut in the very last minute, we played them for sound check use and we had just as much fun. Why? In mainland China, even during sound check, you would have quite a lot of audience! We did that just as if we were doing it for real.

Then it was time for the show to start. After the emcee had introduced us, we got on stage, but Uncle Ray's guitar kept making this huge hum only but no sound...it took like nearly 1 minute for the issue to be resolved. There was dead air almost, and Mina was kind enough to say a few words to greet everyone. There was no guitar amp but PA only, and the main output was not connected to my rig. Then the sound came...and from the footage, you saw what happened next.

Now, you see some image editting and filters added to the footage. Why? Because there was only one footage, and despite the backdrop looked nice and bright, our faces did not have enough light. This was the comment from the two event camera men. The organizer didn't install flood lights and only did so when we started playing the second song. I trimmed that part because it tooked pretty scary, as workers were installing the light units above my head. hahaha!

Our bassist Twinkle pretty much did ok, only you didn't know that her bass guitar had no sound almost during half of the entire sound check time. It was sorted out at the end;

Then for our drummer long tall Jennifer, there was no stool so they found a very nice restaurant chair with a nice white cover for her to sit on. She was okay with that I guess but for her drums set, one tom did not make any sound at all;

As for Uncle Ray, you can see from the footage that he was using Mina's mic during Misirlou. His mic was broken and they didn't get him a new one until the second song;

What else...oh, Mina brought with her a pretty awesome custom-shop Telecaster with a trem for this gig. Her rig seemed okay, but in the very last song we played (Sweet Child 'O Mine), once we started the guitar intro, she realized the guitar was getting out of tune. This Tele has some very stable tuners so it was something else....from all our gigging experience, she immediately realized one string was about to snap, just like in Bocchi the Rock! Anticipating some heavy bending and big time solo coming right up as it is "Sweet Child 'O Mine", Mina said she was worried, and was thinking of what to do should it happened....lucky the song needed to use a lot of the wah wah pedal so the out of tune part could be disguised...but snapping of a string, and not bringing with us a spare guitar (or two) unlike usual, it could be a big problem. Lucky lucky lucky, the string didn't snap!

Despite all these glitches, we had a wonderful time! Folks, almost everytime we gigged, small issues like this would happen. We are quite used to it but I must say, for many others, they might soil their pants.
