Ekso Bionics builds robotic exoskeletons that enable people with spinal cord injuries to stand up and walk again. Its latest exoskeleton, the Ekso GT, was recently approved by the FDA for use by stroke patients as well.
Its "variable assist" technology allows physical therapists to adjust how much power is supplied to each of the robotic legs. Over the course of rehab, therapists can gradually reduce the Ekso's power levels so users will do more work with their own muscles. That workout strengthens and repairs neural connections between the brain and the muscles.
