In his Junior year at Punahou, Kawika Lam, son of Hawaii tennis great David Lam, entered the high school varsity tennis season, already, as a 2x state title holder & defending Boys Singles Individual Champion. In previous seasons, he had claimed a doubles championship with then parter Zander Kim & then dethroned previous defending singles champ Marcel Chan Jr. to claim a singles title as well. Standing in Kawika's way in 2014 was Jeffrey Liang, a fellow high school junior & rival on the junior tennis circuit at the time. Jeffrey, representing Hawaii Baptist Academy, was hunting for his first state title as well as an opportunity to defeat one of his biggest junior competitors on a big stage of a tournament. With a Varsity Tennis State Championship on the line between two outstanding juniors, at one of the most beautiful tennis clubs in the world, what more could you ask for?
After this match, Kawika would go on to win a 4th state title in a row during his Senior year & later played college tennis for the University of Washington. Jeffrey would finish his high school tennis career with another runner up finish to Kawika the following year & also went on to play college tennis at Santa Clara University.
