In today's world, women's access to decent work and economic opportunities remains a pressing global challenge, particularly in regions like sub-Saharan Africa, Central and Southern Asia.
According to United Nations data from 2023, more than 2 billion people worldwide are employed in the informal economy. These are jobs without contracts, social protection, or basic labour rights—and women are disproportionately affected.
In sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia, nearly nine out of ten workers are informally employed. At the same time, more than one in five young people globally are not in education, employment, or training. Even more concerning, compliance with fundamental labour rights has declined in recent years.
In Africa, women make up the majority of the informal workforce, meaning that much of the work women do remains vulnerable, undervalued, and unprotected.
