“Marchenbilder” translates to “fairytale pictures.” I think of the first movement as fairies dancing in a dark forest at twilight and I strongly feel that if it were a color, it would be dark blue. Movement II has a recurring, jaunty rhythm that sounds like a galloping horse and I imagine a warrior on a hunt. The third movement is daring, tricky, and mischievous, like Rumplestiltskin personified. The final movement would fit well with the tale of sleeping beauty, but to me it evokes imagery of sitting by the fire on a cold winter evening.
Schumann demonstrates the full potential of the viola’s character in this piece and pairs it seamlessly with the piano to create pure musical imagery.
This was the third piece I performed on my recital, a benefit concert for Growing Hope Globally, a Christian Response to Hunger. In total, my performance raised $1,652 for this project.
