Former Burundi president Pierre Buyoya seized power in a military coup Thursday (25/7), ousting Hutu incumbent Sylvestre Ntibantunganya and shattering a fragile power-sharing accord between the country's rival ethnic groups. The new regime immediately closed all borders and airports in the central African republic, which has teetered on the brink of civil war for three years. Buyoya, a Tutsi military official who had previously grabbed power in an army-led coup in September 1987, was due to address the nation later in the day, according to a Defence Ministry statement quoted by Burundi radio.
