Structured authoring may sound like an obscure term, but it means a great deal to anyone working in the field of technical documentation. When crafting print documents, unstructured tools like Adobe InDesign dominate, but there are also structured tools such as Adobe FrameMaker or Fonto.
Structured and unstructured worlds often overlap in unique ways. Structured authoring has a long history and began with SGML, which evolved into XML and allowed the separation of content and presentation.
In the print domain, InDesign is preferred. FrameMaker manages the structure, while InDesign excels at graphics. Deciding between structured and unstructured approaches is a challenge. Some documents benefit from the reusability of XML components, while others demand the powerful visual features of InDesign.
Adobe's ownership of both Frame and InDesign gives rise to merger speculation. Yet this is unlikely, as flexible web-based tools such as Canva, Fonto, and Silicon Designer are on the rise.
A future web-based editor could unite structured and unstructured authoring. Time will tell.
