STORYLINE
One of India's most powerful and controversial political leaders could see her party become a national force if she wins a state election starting this week.
For the past five years, Mayawati has ruled as a veritable queen over the gargantuan state of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in the world.
Now, the bottom caste dalit leader is working to convince voters to choose another five years of her brand of caste politics in an election with broad implications for the nation as a whole.
"(The) Congress Party and the other anti-dalit and caste oriented parties could not digest the popularity of the country's only government run by the daughter of a dalit," Mayawati, who uses only one name, told a rally in the town of Sitapur, about 60 miles (90 kilometres) north of Lucknow.
Her low caste supporters cheer her as a defense against the prejudice that keeps them at the bottom of the ladder.
"There can be no government more cruel than this one," he said.
