The Gill Family has deep roots in Idaho County - they are the longest continuous white residents going back to the 1870s. Marty Gill and his sister, Shelley, are the fourth generation of the Gill Family to run the ranching operation, following in the footsteps of their dad, Melvin Gill, and their mom, Midge. Marty is serving as the Board President of the Idaho Cattle Association this year, the pinnacle of leadership in the state's livestock industry.
In our story, we learn about the history of the Gill Ranch in Lucile, Idaho, north of Riggins, and the challenges involved in raising cattle in beautiful and rugged country embracing the Salmon River on the east side and Hells Canyon of the Snake River on the west side. Shelley and her husband, Garrett, manage 500 cattle at the Lucile Ranch, while Marty runs a second ranch in Parma for their operation, while also working full-time for Agri-Beef/Performix Nutrition as a nutritional specialist in a 4-state region. Beef from the Gill Ranch is raised as part of the Double R Ranch brand that you will find in Albertson's supermarkets.
"It's been a heck of a ride," Marty says.
