The Kholmov is a variation of the Closed Ruy Lopez. It begins after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. c3 O-O 9. h3 Be6 and the move Be6 is the Kholmov Variation.
The move 9...Be6 is called the Kholmov because the great Soviet Grandmaster, Ratmir Kholmov began playing the variation in the early 1950s. It was employed as early as 1904, at the Cambridge Springs tournament by Mikhail Chigorin, and then later on by Schlecher as well.
The Kholmov is objectively a bad sideline. Compared to the Chigorin, Breyer, or Zeitsev, it gives white a clear edge. So it should be used rarely and carefully!
