Friction is a force related to two surfaces in contact, which opposes the relative motion between them. Every surface has irregularities (projection and depressions). Interlocking between irregularities gives rise to friction. Bonds are formed at contact points due to high pressure as a result of decreased effective contact area which opposes relative motion.

Kinetic friction exists between contact surfaces only when there is relative motion between the two contact surfaces. Furthermore, in this free online class, you will learn about the properties of the coefficient of friction and the role of friction in walking.
