One bright morning, a crow found a delicious piece of cheese. She perched proudly on a branch, holding the treat in her beak.

Along came a clever fox. He spotted the cheese and thought to himself,

“Mmm, I’d love a bite of that!”

Looking up at the crow, the fox called out, “Goodness! What a magnificent bird you are! Your feathers shine so beautifully. Truly, you must be the loveliest bird in the forest. If your voice is as wonderful as your looks, you surely deserve to be queen of all the birds!”

The crow felt very pleased with such kind words. Wanting to prove the fox right, she opened her beak to give a loud caw!

But as soon as she did—plop!—the cheese tumbled down. Quick as lightning, the sly fox snatched it up and said with a grin, “Thank you, my lady. You do have a voice! But wits is what you lack.”

And off he trotted, leaving the crow a little wiser than before.
