In this presentation, Ferhan Qureshi, Senior Vice President of Biomarker R&D at Octave Bioscience, shares the journey of developing the Multiple Sclerosis Disease Activity (MSDA) Test — the first blood-based test to quantitatively measure disease activity in patients with MS.
The current standard of care for MS relies on often subjective and limited assessments. To address this gap, Octave Bioscience screened over 1,400 proteins across deeply phenotyped studies, linking them to clinical and radiographic disease activity endpoints. Through an iterative process balancing statistical rigor, analytical performance, and biological relevance, 18 protein biomarkers were selected for a custom Olink-based assay panel.
Key highlights of the talk:
The unmet clinical need in Multiple Sclerosis monitoring
Biomarker discovery and selection from over 1,400 candidates
Development of the custom MSDA assay panel using the Olink platform
Analytical and clinical validation of the MSDA Test
Real-world impact: clinical adoption in nearly 100 U.S. clinics and use in clinical trials
This talk highlights how biomarker discovery was translated into a validated, commercially available test transforming MS patient care and supporting drug development.
