One of the most frequently asked questions is how to express “only” in chinese.
Here in the video, i separated the different usages of two easily confused words.
They are 只 and 只有。
Let’s take a look!

只+verb
我只买了一本书。wǒ zhǐ mǎi le yī běn shū
I only bought one book.
我只喜欢看电影。wǒ zhǐ xǐhuān kàn diànyǐng
I only like to watch movies.
现在我只想睡觉。xiànzài wǒ zhǐ xiǎng shuìjiào
Now i only/just want to sleep.
明天我只要上一节课。míngtiān wǒ zhǐ yào shàng yī jié kè
Tomorrow i only have one class.
我只有一支笔。wǒ zhǐ yǒu yī zhī bǐ
I only have one pen.

只有+noun
今天只有三个人来上课。jīntiān zhǐyǒu sān gè rén lái shàngkè
Today there are only three people coming to the class.
只有这幅画好看，其他的都不好看。zhǐyǒu zhè fú huà hǎokàn qítā de dōu bù hǎokàn
Only this painting looks good, the others don’t.

someone + 只有 + age/weight/height
这个小孩只有一岁。zhè gè xiǎohái zhǐyǒu yī suì
This kid is only one year old.
他只有一米四。tā zhǐyǒu yī mǐ sì
He is only 1.4 meters tall.
我的朋友两米，可是他只有65公斤。wǒ de péngyou liǎng mǐ kěshì tā zhǐyǒu liùshíwǔ gōngjīn
My friend is two meters tall, but he weights only 65 kilograms.

只有...才... only if...
只有努力学习，才能通过考试。zhǐyǒu nǔlì xuéxí cái néng tōngguò kǎoshì
Only if one study hard can one pass the exam.
只有多吃饭，才能长高。zhǐyǒu duō chīfàn cái néng zhǎnggāo
Only if one eats a lot can one grow taller.
