Everyone thought they knew Cats. In fact, for over four decades, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical has remained relatively unchanged on the stage—from its leg-warmer-filled costuming to its feline-esque choreography. Which is why CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL was such a revelation, doing what a revival should always do: take something audiences thought they knew and reimagine it with fresh eyes. From Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch’s brilliant idea to set the Jellicle Ball in an underground ballroom competition (and set it with a variety of musical theatre and ballroom artists), to Arturo Lyons and Omari Wiles’ fierce choreography which showcased the personality of each individual cat, CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL added new depths to the musical. No longer were they felines looking for a new life, they were now marginalized queer individuals finally able to showcase who they truly were. For their bold, poignant reimagining that allowed us to see this formerly esoteric musical with new eyes and new understanding, the judges have awarded an Obie Award for Outstanding Direction to ZHAILON LEVINGSTON, BILL RAUCH, ARTURO LYONS, and OMARI WILES.
